Goldbug Hot Springs cascades through roughly six waterfall-fed pools along Warm Spring Creek at 5,320 feet in the Salmon National Forest. The 113°F source water cools as it tumbles downhill, so each pool holds a different temperature. It is one of the most photographed thermal springs in Idaho.
The 1.4-mile trail climbs steeply from the Salmon River Scenic Byway into a narrow canyon where the creek has carved terraced rock formations. Water spills from pool to pool, each rimmed with travertine deposits from the calcium-rich water at 73 mg/L. The canyon walls block wind and frame a strip of sky overhead. In winter, ice forms on the surrounding rocks while steam fills the drainage.
History of Goldbug Hot Spring
Located about 20 miles south of Salmon, the spring sits along a fault system that runs parallel to the Salmon River. The water chemistry is distinct from most Idaho thermal springs: high calcium and sulfate at 120 mg/L suggest circulation through sedimentary rock rather than the granitic systems found farther west. A near-neutral pH of 7.8 supports the travertine formations that give the pools their shape.
The trail gains significant elevation in 1.4 miles, so sturdy footwear is necessary. Pool temperatures vary by season and position, with upper pools generally hotter. The site draws crowds on summer weekends, and early morning arrivals secure more solitude. Snow buries the trail in winter, though some visitors snowshoe in. No facilities exist at the springs or trailhead.
