Steam Vents
Steam vents at 3,559 feet emerge on Kilauea's slopes where volcanic heat intersects abundant rainfall to create dramatic fumarolic activity. The National Park preserves this geothermal feature within protected lands receiving 83.8 inches of annual precipitation.
The landscape shifts between dark lava flows and verdant forest as trails approach the vents. Moisture-laden air carries the smell of sulfur as steam plumes rise through the canopy in an environment where the volcanic terrain supports productive native Hawaiian vegetation.
Kilauea's heat flow extends to modest elevations where groundwater circulation readily achieves temperatures sufficient for steam production. This reflects the volcano's young, active geothermal system and ongoing magmatic influence.
Reaching this site requires a 1.6-mile hike from Hawaii Belt Road through potentially unstable lava terrain. The wet climate means trails can be muddy and slippery, making good traction essential. Bring water despite the frequent rain.
