Superheated water rises in the Arkansas River valley near Salida at 7,877 feet elevation. The spring region features relatively open sagebrush and aspen terrain typical of South Park and its surrounding mountains. Access is straightforward from a roadside pullout overlooking the immediate landscape.
The spring represents a deep geothermal resource with low mineralization, featuring only 200 mg/L of sodium and 190 mg/L of sulfate. Geological context suggests the heat derives from subsurface thermal anomalies rather than surface mineral enrichment. Historical use by Ute peoples preceded European settlement in this mountain valley.
Road access makes this an easy stop for most visitors during any season. The immediate area offers limited soaking infrastructure, requiring visitors bring appropriate containment. Summer months provide the most comfortable ambient temperatures for thermal bathing in this high-elevation setting.
